I Fought the Law

Whenever this song would come on the oldies station when I was a kid first learning to read music and play piano, my dad (himself a piano player and former high school music teacher) often used it as a teachable moment to reinforce how to count triplets:

Fast forward to about 1:19 for the “robbin’ people with a . . . SIX GUN!” part. Those six prominent beats you hear? They consist of two triplets played in a row. Get it? Two groups of three? Which adds up to six? A six gun? My dad loved puns and word play and just always thought that little musical moment was so cute and clever.

RIP, songwriter Sonny Curtis.
